What we publish

  • We accept works written on legal topics broadly (current events, legal theory, international law, jurisprudence, law & society). Papers need not be on American legal systems.
  • Works can be original short essays, explainers, adapted class work, op-ed style analysis, or legal commentary. Students in any area of study are welcome to submit, as long as a piece engages with a legal issue.
  • Submissions should be between 750 and 2,500 words.
  • We aim for a readable, engaging tone written for a general audience: not just for law students, but any student with an interest in law.

Formatting

  • Submissions are accepted in Google Doc or Microsoft Word form.
  • Times New Roman, 12-point, double-spaced. Footnotes in Chicago-style, Times New Roman, 10-point, single-spaced.
  • Section headings (if applicable): Shorter pieces often read fine as continuous prose and don’t need headings. For longer or more complex submissions, use bold, title-case headings to break the piece into clear sections and guide the reader.

What makes a good Bowdoin Student Legal Forum piece?

The best submissions take a legal question and make it clear, engaging and relevant to a reader who isn’t a legal expert. We are looking for pieces with a clear argument – not just case summaries, but points of view. Strong pieces are timely or connect to something relevant to the reader.
